Calculate the equivalent resistance R_eq, between the a-b points of the circuit shown in Figure 02-05.1.

Note that the resistors R₁ and R₂ are in parallel. Therefore, we must solve the parallel with the equation shown below.

R₁₂ = R₁ R₂ / R₁ + R₂

By substituting for numeric values, we have:

R₁₂ = 12 x 6 / 12 + 6 = 4 ohms

So R₁₂ is in series with R₃. So to calculate the equivalent resistance of the circuit just add the values, or:

R_eq = 8 + 4 = 12 ohms
