Determine the value of C to produce the desired total capacitance of C_total = 2 µF in the circuit shown in Figure 03-04.1.

Solution of the Problem 3.4

As we know, the capacitors of 2 and 4 µF are in parallel. Thus, by adding its values we have the value of the equivalent capacitance, or 6 µF. Now, this capacitance is in series with the capacitor denominated of C. It's the result of this series, must be equal to 2 µF. Then we can write the following equation:

2 = C_total = 6 C / 6 + C

Substituting the numerical values and performing the calculations, we find as result the value of:

C = 3 µF
