In the figure below, L₁ = 12 H, L₂ = 6 H and L₃ = 12 H.

Calculate the total inductance of the circuit show in Figure 04-02.1 between points a and b.

Solution of the Problem 4-2

Through the circuit, we notice that L₂ and L₃ are in parallel. Thus, the equivalent inductance will be given by:

L_eq = L₂. L₃ / (L₂ + L₃)

By doing the numerical substitution, we find:

L_eq = 6 12/ (6 + 12) = 4 H

Now, this equivalent inductance is in series with L₁. Therefore, to find the inductance between points a-b simply add them, or:

L_ab = L_eq + L₁ = 4 + 12 = 16 H
